As I made the move into retail, I have been shocked at the lack of integration between data sources. Each of my vendors provide data to me differently, making it virtually impossible to automate, let alone streamline data entry. When I create a new item in my POS, I am usually collecting 10-12 data points for each item. I have to typically get the necessary data from a combination of my invoice, the vendors public and wholesaler websites, the box, etc. I hope this new technology will help. If you walk into almost any retail store today, and you'll see the familiar black-and-white UPC barcode on nearly every product. For more than 50 years, that simple barcode has quietly powered the global retail industry, allowing stores to identify products, manage inventory, and process purchases in seconds.
Now, the retail industry is preparing for its biggest change since the introduction of the barcode itself.
GS1—the global organization responsible for barcode standards—is leading an initiative called Sunrise 2027, encouraging retailers and manufacturers worldwide to begin adopting 2D barcodes, most commonly QR-code style symbols, alongside traditional UPC barcodes. While consumers often associate QR codes with restaurant menus or website links, the next generation of retail barcodes will do much more than direct you to a webpage.

What Is GS1?
GS1 is the international nonprofit organization responsible for creating the standards that allow products to move efficiently through global commerce.
Every UPC barcode you've scanned at a checkout lane is built on GS1 standards. The organization also manages Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), which uniquely identify products across manufacturers and retailers.
When a game publisher prints a UPC barcode on a new board game or trading card product, they're participating in a standardized system that allows distributors, retailers, and point-of-sale systems to recognize exactly what that product is.
That standard has served retailers well for decades—but it has one major limitation.
The Problem with Traditional UPC Barcodes
A traditional UPC barcode contains essentially one piece of information:

That's enough to ring up a sale, but modern retailers increasingly need much more information than a simple product identifier.
Today's retailers often need to know:
Is this product part of a recall?
When does it expire?
What production lot did it come from?
Is this a limited edition?
Is it authentic?

Does the manufacturer have digital instructions or support information?
A UPC barcode simply can't answer those questions.
When I was in the fiber and textiles industry, it was a dream to provide consumers with the story behind the products they were buying. The source of the fibers, where it was manufactured, etc. As I read about this new technology it might be able to bring this dream intro reality.
Enter the 2D Barcode
Unlike a traditional linear barcode, a 2D barcode can store dramatically more information in a very small space.
Rather than simply identifying the product, a single scan can include:
GTIN (product identification)
Batch or lot number
Serial number
Manufacturing date
Expiration date
Promotional information
Product authentication

Sustainability details
Regulatory compliance data
Perhaps even more importantly, the barcode can point consumers directly to manufacturer-controlled digital content that can be updated without changing the packaging.

What Is Sunrise 2027?
GS1's initiative, known as Sunrise 2027, is less of a hard deadline than an industry milestone.
The goal is that by 2027, retail point-of-sale systems around the world should be capable of scanning both traditional UPC barcodes and the newer GS1-compliant 2D barcodes.
Importantly, manufacturers are not expected to replace UPC barcodes overnight.
Instead, many products will carry both a traditional UPC and a 2D barcode during a multi-year transition period. This allows retailers to upgrade scanners and software gradually while ensuring compatibility with existing checkout systems.

If inventory systems take advantage of lot-level information, retailers could track products more precisely than ever before.
Instead of simply knowing they have ten copies of a game, they may know exactly which production run each copy came from.
Easier Product Recalls
Should a manufacturer discover a printing defect or packaging issue, stores could quickly identify affected inventory without pulling every copy from the shelf.
Better Customer Service
Imagine a customer asking how to play a game.
Rather than searching online, a staff member could scan the barcode and immediately access official teaching videos, setup guides, FAQs, or replacement component requests.

Scanning a 2D barcode could instantly display:

For many retailers, this will simply arrive as part of normal software updates over the next several years.
Industry Coordination
The greatest challenge may not be technology—it will be coordination.
Manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, POS vendors, and logistics providers all need to support the same standards.
That is precisely why GS1 has spent years developing Sunrise 2027 as a coordinated global initiative.
What Should Tabletop Retailers Do Today?
Fortunately, there's no need to panic.
Instead, retailers can begin preparing by asking a few practical questions:
Does our current barcode scanner support 2D codes?
Is our POS vendor planning Sunrise 2027 compatibility?
Are our inventory systems ready to capture richer product data?
Are our distributors discussing GS1 adoption?
Are we prepared to take advantage of the customer experience improvements this technology enables?
Stores that start these conversations now will be well positioned as adoption accelerates.

The move to 2D barcodes is about much more than replacing one symbol with another.
